What Mississippi law says
How to fix inactive status
Under Mississippi law, the county election commissioners mark you inactive after they mail you a confirmation card asking if you still live at your address. Inactive voters cannot use a regular ballot on Election Day, but they can still vote by affidavit ballot.
Three ways to get back to active
- 1
Return the confirmation card
If you have not moved, mark that on the card and mail it back. You go back to active at your current address. If you moved within the same county, your address is updated.
- 2
Update your information with your Circuit Clerk
You can be moved back to active at any time by updating your information with your county Circuit Clerk. You do not have to wait for an election.
- 3
Vote by affidavit ballot
Vote in person and write your current address on the affidavit envelope. If you still live in the same county, that is enough to return you to active.
Before you go vote
- Go to the polling place for your own precinct.
- Bring a photo ID, such as a Mississippi driver's license, a state ID card, or a U.S. passport.
- No photo ID? You can still vote by affidavit ballot. Then you have 5 business days to show your ID at the Circuit Clerk's office, or your ballot will not count.
- A free Mississippi Voter ID card is available at any Circuit Clerk's office.
- Fill out the affidavit envelope completely, with your correct address.
If you do nothing
- You stay on the list as inactive through two federal general elections after the card was mailed.
- If you do not respond, update your information, or vote by then, your name can be removed (purged).
- Voting in any election in your county, serving on jury duty or answering a jury summons, or being in the active or reserve military protects you from being purged.
If you moved or were purged
- If you moved to a different county, you are removed from your old county's list and must register in your new county.
- If your name was already purged, you must register again with your county.
- The deadline to register for the November 3, 2026 election was October 5, 2026. Registering now counts for later elections.
